BELOW THE SURFACEPond snails

Snails graze on algae on submerged rocks and plants.

Where do these organisms live?

On the banks: grasses grow in wet soil; these fungi grow on decaying logs. On the surface: ducks float and lily pads rest on the water. Below: pond snails move over submerged surfaces. Bacteria also break down dead material, but are too small to see here.

Illustrations represent groups and are not to scale. The distant landscape is scenery; only the added groups and bars show simulated populations.
